New Zealand will drill its first superhot geothermal well near Taupō in mid-2027, backed by a $60M government investment.
Todd Energy has been chosen as the preferred contractor to drill New Zealand’s first exploratory superhot geothermal well near Taupō, with drilling set to begin around mid-2027.
The project, backed by a $60 million government allocation, aims to access deep, ultra-hot geothermal resources at depths of 5–6 kilometers, potentially unlocking vast clean energy supplies.
Located at the Rotokawa field, the well is part of a three-well programme overseen by MBIE’s Kānoa unit and involves collaboration with local stakeholders, including iwi and Mercury.
Todd Energy was selected for its local expertise, own drilling rig, and established supply chain.
The initiative seeks to advance next-generation geothermal energy while leveraging existing infrastructure and skilled labor, supporting New Zealand’s renewable energy goals amid declining gas reserves.
