Missouri passes bill allowing divorce during pregnancy, making it the first state to remove legal barriers.
Missouri lawmakers have passed a bipartisan bill unanimously, removing legal barriers that allowed courts to block divorces during pregnancy.
The legislation, backed by Reps. Cecelie Williams and Raychel Proudie, aims to protect pregnant women, especially survivors of domestic violence, from being trapped in abusive relationships.
Currently, judges can delay divorce finalization until after childbirth, but the new law would eliminate that hurdle.
The bill now awaits Governor Mike Kehoe’s signature and, if signed, will make Missouri the first state to allow divorce during pregnancy without legal restrictions.
