On March 10, 2026, First Nations leaders unveiled five repatriated cultural artifacts returned from the Vatican at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, marking the culmination of a decades-long effort to return 62 items taken over a century ago.
The artifacts, including ceremonial objects and everyday items from various Indigenous communities, were originally sent to Rome for a 1925 exhibition.
The return followed advocacy by Indigenous leaders, a 2022 meeting with Pope Francis, and a 2025 announcement by Pope Leo XIV to transfer the items to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, who then handed them over to First Nations.
The event, attended by community leaders and elders, symbolized a major step in cultural restitution, reconciliation, and the restoration of ancestral heritage.
Two additional crates containing unverified items were also unboxed in a private ceremony.
