Iowa expands Medicaid for disabled workers and enforces citizenship checks for food and child care aid.
The Iowa House passed HF 2716, raising the Medicaid income limit for people with disabilities to 300% of the federal poverty level, allowing more to work without losing health coverage.
The bill also requires use of the federal SAVE system to verify citizenship or immigration status for programs like WIC, SNAP, and child care, restricting eligibility to U.S. citizens and qualified aliens.
While Republicans praised the expanded work incentives, Democrats opposed the nutrition program restrictions, warning they would harm children and reduce local spending.
The bill passed 62-31, with an amendment to remove restrictions rejected.
It now moves to the Senate.
