Indiana’s free book program for young children stays active after state funds ended, thanks to fundraising and a major donation, but its future beyond 2027 is uncertain.
Indiana’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, providing free books to children from birth to age five, has raised 90% of its two-year fundraising goal under First Lady Maureen Braun’s leadership after state funding ended in 2025.
The program remains active in all 92 counties, serving over 143,000 children, with support from a $500,000 donation by CenterPoint Energy.
While literacy rates in Indiana have improved significantly, including a record rise in third-grade proficiency, the program’s future beyond June 2027 remains uncertain due to undisclosed funding targets and no official commitment to restore state support.
