A former Congo football chief got life in absentia for stealing FIFA pandemic funds meant for women’s programs and training.
Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, former president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Football Federation, was sentenced to life in prison in absentia for money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, and using falsified documents.
The conviction stems from a corruption probe into the misuse of FIFA development funds during the pandemic, which were intended for football programs including women’s initiatives and a national training center.
Two other senior officials received five-year sentences.
