Florida bans local DEI programs, with penalties and lawsuits possible; law likely to be signed by Gov. DeSantis.
Florida's legislature has passed a bill banning local governments from funding, implementing, or promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including eliminating DEI offices and staff.
The law, which could lead to removal of officials who violate it and allow lawsuits against non-compliant governments, is expected to be signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Sponsored by Republican Rep. Dean Black, it follows years of Republican-led efforts to restrict DEI programs across state agencies and public universities.
Democrats warn the bill is overly broad, potentially unconstitutional, and could harm cultural events and efforts to address inequities.
The 2026 legislative session ends March 13.
