Australia may ban over-the-counter rodenticides due to wildlife harm, pending final approval.
Australia's national pesticides regulator has recommended banning over-the-counter sales of second-generation rodenticides, reclassifying them as restricted chemicals to be used only by licensed professionals.
The move, driven by evidence of widespread harm to native wildlife like owls and quolls through secondary poisoning, includes a 12-month suspension of registrations starting March 24, strict usage rules, and requirements for tamper-resistant bait stations.
Final approval rests with Assistant Agriculture Minister Anthony Chisholm, with a full ban possible.
The change follows a four-year review and growing pressure from conservationists, as these poisons remain banned in the U.S. and much of Europe.
