An AI tool detected 11 more breast cancers in a UK trial, improving detection and speed while reducing workload.
An AI tool called Mia detected 11 additional breast cancers—seven invasive—in a UK trial of 10,889 women, increasing detection by 10.4% and identifying tumors too small for human radiologists to see. The AI, used in NHS Grampian, reduced patient notification time from two weeks to three days, cut staff workload by up to 31%, and lowered unnecessary recalls. One woman, Yvonne Cook, credited the AI with catching a small, aggressive tumor early, preventing more severe treatment. Findings, published in Nature Cancer and supported by data from over 175,000 scans, show AI outperforms human specialists in accuracy and efficiency, though the UK National Screening Committee has not yet recommended its use.
