Abbott recalls 3M FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors over faulty low glucose readings linked to 7 deaths and 730+ injuries.
Abbott has recalled about 3 million FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus glucose monitors due to a manufacturing flaw causing falsely low blood sugar readings, linked to at least seven deaths and over 730 serious injuries worldwide.
The error prompted patients to take unnecessary glucose, worsening health risks, including one man who died after being given sugar despite dangerously high blood sugar.
The recall did not include his specific sensor, so his death isn’t counted in Abbott’s official tally.
The company says the issue stemmed from a temporary production problem now fixed, and not all sensors in recalled batches were faulty.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of diabetes technology and led to multiple lawsuits.
