Washington state has passed a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, signed by Governor Bob Ferguson on March 9, 2026, granting nannies, housekeepers, caregivers, and gardeners new labor protections effective July 1, 2027.
The law ensures minimum wage, overtime pay, written contracts, sick leave, and protection from harassment, retaliation, and document withholding.
Workers must have a regular schedule of at least four hours per month to qualify.
The legislation, championed by Rep. Brianna Thomas, expands on Seattle’s 2019 ordinance and aims to recognize domestic work as legitimate.
Violations may result in penalties up to $20,000.
The state Department of Labor and Industries will enforce the law and handle complaints.
