Volkswagen has launched its first large-scale battery storage project in Salzgitter, Germany, a 20 MW/40 MWh facility called the Elli PowerCenter, developed by its energy subsidiary Elli. The grid-connected system, using PowerCo’s Unified Cell technology, marks Volkswagen’s entry into stationary energy storage and supports its broader strategy to integrate battery production, storage, and energy trading. The project is part of a growing trend of software-driven energy firms expanding BESS ownership across Europe, with similar initiatives by Flower and Nuvve.
