A Virginia boater sued DC Water over a Jan. 19, 2026, sewage spill into the Potomac River, blaming pipe failure for environmental and economic damage.
A Virginia boater has filed a class action lawsuit against DC Water over a January 19, 2026, sewage pipe rupture that spilled an estimated 250 million gallons of raw wastewater into the Potomac River near Glen Echo, Maryland.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, alleges DC Water failed to maintain the aging Potomac Interceptor pipe—installed in the 1960s—in a safe condition, causing environmental damage, property harm, and economic losses for businesses and recreational users.
DC Water acknowledged the pipe was deteriorating, said emergency repairs were underway and nearly complete, and confirmed no further sewage was flowing into the river.
The utility is investigating the cause, with early findings suggesting the incident may have been unusual.
President Donald Trump approved federal emergency assistance in response.
DC Water has not commented on the lawsuit.
