UK launches inquiry into 1989 murder of Belfast lawyer Pat Finucane, with allegations of state collusion.
The UK government has launched a formal independent inquiry into the 1989 murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, a human rights lawyer killed by the Ulster Defence Association at his home, with allegations of state collusion.
Led by chair Sir Gary Hickinbottom, the inquiry, established under the Inquiries Act 2005, will examine the circumstances of the killing, identify all involved, assess preventability, and investigate state failures, with powers to compel documents and witnesses.
It follows decades of advocacy by Finucane’s family, including widow Geraldine Finucane, who welcomed the move as a milestone in their pursuit of justice.
The inquiry will finalize its timeline and budget within four months.
