A UK court charges a 58-year-old former Syrian intelligence officer with murder and torture over 2011 Damascus crackdown, marking the first case under the UK’s war crimes law.
A 58-year-old former Syrian Air Force Intelligence officer living in the UK has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of torture as crimes against humanity, along with one count of conduct ancillary to murder, for alleged actions during the 2011 crackdown on protests in Damascus suburbs.
The case, the first of its kind under the UK’s International Criminal Court Act 2001, stems from events in April and June 2011, with the suspect arrested in December 2021 and released on bail.
Authorities say the investigation involved international cooperation and reflects the UK’s “no safe haven” policy toward alleged war criminals.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, with his identity protected by a court order.
