Tamil Nadu planted 20,000 mangrove seedlings across 20 hectares along Chennai’s Buckingham Canal from 2025 to 2026 as part of a climate resilience project.
The effort, led by the state’s forest department and supported by ICICI Bank’s CSR program, includes a “fishbone” canal system to ensure tidal flow for mangrove growth.
The project aims to reduce coastal erosion, strengthen defenses against storms and sea-level rise, and restore biodiversity.
It builds on earlier phases that planted over 17,000 seedlings in prior years.
