A Tamil Nadu hospital performed South India’s first bilateral uterine artery embolization, treating a woman’s fibroids without surgery.
Kauvery Hospital in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, has performed the first bilateral uterine artery embolisation (UAE) in South Tamil Nadu, treating a 51-year-old woman with severe uterine fibroids using a minimally invasive, nonsurgical technique.
Led by Dr. Amalan Ignatius, the procedure blocked blood flow to the fibroids via catheter-delivered particles, causing them to shrink.
The patient avoided surgery, preserved her uterus, and was discharged within 24 hours, with no pain or bleeding at a seven-day follow-up and imaging confirming no blood flow to the fibroid.
The treatment offers a significant alternative for women seeking relief from fibroid symptoms without hysterectomy.
