South Korea fined Mercedes-Benz $7.6 million for falsely claiming all its EQE and EQS EVs used CATL batteries, when some used Farasis cells.
South Korea’s antitrust regulator fined Mercedes-Benz 11.2 billion won ($7.6 million) for misleading consumers about battery suppliers in its EQE and EQS electric vehicles.
The company’s internal sales materials falsely claimed all models used batteries from CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, while some vehicles used cells from Farasis Energy, a supplier not among the top 10 globally.
The investigation began after a fire in an Incheon parking lot involving a Mercedes EV with a Farasis battery.
About 3,000 vehicles with these batteries were sold between June 2023 and August 2024, generating 281 billion won in revenue.
The fine, the maximum allowed under law, will be paid jointly by Mercedes-Benz’s German headquarters and its Korean unit, which are also being referred to prosecutors over the creation of misleading sales materials.
