Australian and Indian researchers have found that replacing 5% to 10% of coal with rice husk pellets in steelmaking can cut carbon emissions by half, according to a trial at a commercial plant in India.
The test, conducted at Jindal Steel with support from RESCONS Solutions, showed the biomass alternative worked as effectively as coal.
The method could reduce India’s steel industry emissions by 357 million tonnes annually, offering a scalable solution for decarbonizing a sector responsible for about eight percent of global emissions.
The findings come amid growing global interest in green steel, including Australia’s $1 billion Green Iron Investment Fund and India’s potential green steel mandate.
