Oregon raises lodging tax to fund wildlife conservation and compensate ranchers.
Oregon lawmakers have passed a bill to raise the state’s lodging tax from 1.5% to 2.75%, generating about $37 million annually to fund wildlife conservation for over 300 species, including non-game animals and habitat protection.
The measure, backed by bipartisan support, also includes compensation for ranchers losing livestock to wolves.
While conservation groups applaud the move, tourism and business leaders warn the tax could hurt visitor numbers, reduce occupancy, and strain the hospitality sector.
The bill now awaits Governor Tina Kotek’s decision.
