New Zealand launches Vespex® bait to eradicate invasive yellow-legged hornets in Auckland.
Biosecurity New Zealand has launched a world-first, locally developed protein bait, Vespex®, to target invasive yellow-legged hornets in Auckland.
The bait, containing low-dose fipronil safe for native species, is placed in stations during mid-March when hornets seek protein.
It’s designed to be carried back to nests, poisoning colonies.
Deployed in surveillance zones B and C, it complements existing methods like drone-based thermal imaging and radio tracking.
Efforts remain science-driven and focused on complete eradication, with no current plans to expand beyond current zones.
