MLS banned two former players for life over betting on games, including their own teams, during 2024–2025.
Major League Soccer has imposed lifetime bans on former players Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones for betting on MLS matches, including games involving their own teams, during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Both were placed on administrative leave in October 2024 after suspicious betting alerts led to an investigation by law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.
The probe found they placed bets on multiple matches, including one where Jones wagered on receiving a yellow card during a Crew vs. Red Bulls game—an outcome that occurred as predicted.
MLS said there was no evidence the bets influenced game results but suspected they shared confidential information with other bettors.
The league has pushed to ban card wagers in 33 of 41 U.S. jurisdictions allowing sports betting.
Commissioner Don Garber reaffirmed MLS’s commitment to match integrity, and this marks the second lifetime ban in league history, following Felipe Hernandez’s 2021 suspension.
