Kenya deploys 350 body cameras for border officers to fight corruption and boost transparency.
The Kenya Revenue Authority has launched body-worn cameras for customs and border control officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other key entry points, deploying 350 devices to enhance transparency, combat corruption, and improve accountability.
The cameras record video, audio, and GPS data during passenger checks, cargo inspections, and border operations, with footage stored securely and monitored via a central command center.
The initiative, supported by the World Bank, aims to strengthen evidence collection, deter bribery and smuggling, and build public trust.
It follows increased anti-graft efforts, including dismissals of corrupt staff and recovery of illicit assets, and aligns Kenya with global standards used in the UK and parts of Asia.
While privacy concerns have been raised, KRA asserts compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act.
