John Zumbrunnen has been named permanent provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, succeeding Charles Isbell Jr.
He was selected over finalists from the University of Georgia and University of Texas-Austin.
The longtime UW–Madison faculty member, who served as interim provost since June 2025, will lead the university through challenges including budget cuts and the rise of artificial intelligence in education.
Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin, departing for Columbia University, praised Zumbrunnen’s commitment to shared governance, student success, and the Wisconsin Idea.
His official start coincides with the search for the next chancellor beginning May 17.
