JNIM killed 12 fuel convoy drivers in Mali in January 2026, executing them after ambush and burning trucks.
In late January 2026, JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-linked group, attacked a fuel convoy on National Route 1 in southwestern Mali, killing 12 truck drivers and apprentices in a summary execution, according to Human Rights Watch.
The convoy, escorted by Malian soldiers and traveling from Senegal, was ambushed near Ambidedi village, leading to a firefight, the burning of at least 12 trucks, and the capture and execution of fleeing drivers, whose bodies were found blindfolded and hands tied.
JNIM claimed responsibility, stating it targeted Malian troops, but provided no details.
The attack occurred amid ongoing disruptions to fuel supplies since September 2025, contributing to shortages across Mali.
Malian authorities did not respond to the incident or to Human Rights Watch’s inquiry.
