Ireland’s deputy prime minister condemned the EU’s purchase of Russian energy as harmful to Ukraine and global stability.
Ireland’s deputy premier, Simon Harris, denounced the EU buying Russian oil and gas as “utterly despicable,” warning it would allow Russia to profit from global conflicts, including the Middle East crisis, undermining sanctions meant to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking at an EU finance ministers’ meeting in Brussels, he stressed the need to maintain economic pressure on Russia, remain united in supporting Ukraine, and avoid distractions that could weaken solidarity.
While acknowledging progress in diversifying Europe’s energy sources since 2022, Harris said the continent remains overly dependent on external suppliers and called for urgent steps toward greater energy independence amid ongoing market volatility and global instability.
