The Indian Income Tax Department has uncovered approximately ₹408 crore in unreported restaurant sales through a nationwide AI-driven investigation conducted on March 8, 2026, targeting 62 establishments across 46 cities in 22 states.
Using artificial intelligence, officials analyzed transaction data from about 1.77 lakh restaurants, comparing actual sales with declared tax returns and identifying widespread underreporting, including deleted bills and manipulated records.
In response, the department launched the "SAKSHAM NUDGE" campaign, notifying around 63,000 restaurants to voluntarily correct their filings by March 31, 2026, under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act, emphasizing a trust-based approach to improve compliance without immediate penalties.
