Indian domestic investors now hold 36% of Nifty 50 stocks, up from decades past, as market growth and investor participation surge.
Domestic investors now hold about 36% of the free float market capitalization of Nifty 50 companies, a major shift from three decades ago, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said at the index’s 30th anniversary.
He highlighted the rise of sectors like IT, financial services, and telecommunications, with the financial sector’s weight in the index increasing from 21% to about 38% by February 2025.
India’s market capitalization exceeds 130% of GDP, up from 35% in 1995, driven by over 140 million unique investors shifting savings into capital markets.
Pandey praised India’s exchanges for global competitiveness, citing high trading volumes, IPO activity, and efficient settlements, supported by collaboration among market participants through shared systems and interoperability.
