Hate speech against Muslim Americans spiked on X after U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, with 25,300 posts reaching 279K people, despite limited platform action.
Islamophobic content targeting Muslim Americans surged on social media, particularly on X, following the U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran starting February 28, 2026, with over 25,300 hate posts reported between then and March 9, reaching more than 279,000 people when reposts are included.
The posts featured dehumanizing language, calls for violence and deportation, and were amplified by inflammatory rhetoric from political and military figures, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Despite 30 reports to X, only 11 posts were removed, highlighting enforcement gaps.
The Center for the Study of Organized Hate warned that such rhetoric, which frames the conflict as a religious or civilizational struggle, fuels real-world hostility against Muslims, who already face widespread bias and violence.
