Ghana dismantles network producing 30,000 fake license plates, arrests five, with two others sought.
Ghana’s DVLA and national security forces have dismantled a nationwide network producing and distributing over 30,000 counterfeit dealer vehicle plates, valued at more than GH¢12.5 million, resulting in an estimated GH¢20 million in annual state revenue loss.
Five suspects have been arrested, remanded, and set to appear in court on March 17, with two others still at large.
The operation, centered in Accra’s La Paz, involved manufacturing plates at an undisclosed site and distributing them with forged documents like fake insurance certificates and logbooks.
Authorities warn that using or distributing fake plates is a criminal offense punishable by prosecution and that vehicles with counterfeit plates will be impounded.
The DVLA plans to introduce RFID-embedded plates and expand services with five new offices opening soon.
