EU approves faster deportations with new return rules, set for 2027.
The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee has backed reforms to EU return rules, advancing a plan to speed up deportations of non-EU nationals without legal status.
The new rules, set to take effect by July 2027, establish a European return order system, allow for up to 24 months of detention in specific cases, and permit returns to third countries via formal agreements, including through return hubs.
Entry bans may apply for non-compliance or security risks.
The move, supported by centre-right and far-right factions, aims to improve enforcement after the 2008 directive’s failure, though left-wing groups and human rights advocates warn it threatens migrant rights and could enable oversight gaps.
Final approval awaits full Parliament vote and trilogue talks with the Council.
