Drone strikes by Haitian forces and U.S. contractors killed at least 1,243 since March 2025, Human Rights Watch says.
Human Rights Watch reports that explosive drone strikes by Haitian security forces and private contractors, including the U.S.-based Vectus Global, have killed at least 1,243 people and injured 738 others since March 2025, with 17 children and 43 civilians not linked to gangs among the dead.
The attacks, concentrated in Port-au-Prince, involved drones targeting vehicles and individuals, including non-combatants, and nearly doubled in frequency from November to January 2026.
The group condemned the operations as potentially unlawful and extrajudicial, calling for an immediate halt, independent investigations, and accountability, while the U.N. human rights chief labeled the use of lethal force as disproportionate and likely illegal.
