Douglas County, Colorado, is deploying Hi-Lo sirens on select patrol cars to alert residents during life-threatening emergencies like wildfires, flash floods, and major law enforcement incidents.
The sirens emit a high-low tone followed by a recorded message: “When you hear HI LO, it's time to go!” They will only be used for mandatory evacuations and critical safety events, not all emergencies.
The change aims to improve public response, especially as Colorado has seen a surge in wildfires, with all of its 20 largest fires occurring since 2000.
The sheriff’s office shared a video demonstrating the alert to help residents recognize and act quickly.
