A 6-year-old deaf boy from Hayward, California, was deported to Colombia with his mother and brother during a routine immigration check-in, despite being separated from his essential hearing aids, according to his attorney and Congressman Eric Swalwell.
The family, who had lived in the U.S. since 2022 and had no criminal record, were detained at a San Francisco immigration office.
Swalwell’s office delivered the boy’s hearing devices to Colombia, where he now has access to them.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with officials and advocates calling the deportation inhumane and a violation of due process, highlighting concerns about ICE enforcement practices, especially regarding vulnerable children with disabilities.
