Canada increased tariff-free U.S. vehicle imports for a top automaker due to strong Canadian production, per a Feb. 26 order.
Canada has granted an unnamed automaker a higher quota for tariff-free U.S. vehicle imports due to stronger-than-expected production and sales in Canada, according to a February 26 order-in-council.
The decision, based on the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, allows increased duty-free imports for companies meeting Canadian assembly and investment benchmarks.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed Honda and Toyota are among those benefiting from the policy, which rewards domestic manufacturing.
The federal government is reviewing the auto tariff remission program, launched in February, to expand incentives for local production, with findings expected by April 13.
Canada maintains 25% counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum separately.
The automaker’s identity remains confidential.
