Zoya Baqit leads a digital effort to preserve Altay’s 12,000-year-old rock art using 3D scanning and digital rubbing.
Zoya Baqit, a 37-year-old deputy to China’s 14th National People's Congress, is leading a digital preservation effort for Altay’s ancient rock art in Xinjiang.
Since 2021, she and her team at the Altay Regional Museum have used 3D scanning and digital rubbing to document nearly 1,000 rock art pieces across 125 sites, some dating back 12,000 years, including depictions of early skiing.
The project, part of the national cultural relics survey, assesses terrain and weather to create non-invasive digital records, protecting fragile artworks from erosion.
Baqit promotes technology-based conservation and links Altay’s ancient heritage to modern winter tourism, ensuring these cultural stories endure.
