A Texas judge ordered Camp Mystic to preserve flood-damaged areas after a 2025 disaster killed 27 people, pending legal and legislative investigations.
A Texas judge has ordered Camp Mystic to preserve damaged areas, including cabins and land near the Guadalupe River, following the 2025 flood that killed 25 girls and two counselors during the Fourth of July.
The order, issued in response to a lawsuit by the family of 8-year-old Cile Steward, who remains missing, prohibits construction or alterations that could destroy evidence for ongoing legal and legislative investigations.
The flood caused river levels to rise from 14 to 29.5 feet in under an hour, overwhelming the camp without an evacuation.
Camp Mystic’s owners say they lacked experience with such extreme flooding and had no real-time camera monitoring.
The camp, which requires state licensing to reopen, has seen over 850 campers register for summer 2026, but families remain critical of reconstruction and memorial plans made without their input.
The judge’s ruling does not determine the camp’s operational future.
