South Africa expands Smart ID access via bank partnerships, enabling fast, paperless applications at branches to fight fraud and improve service.
South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has launched a digital partnership with Capitec and Standard Bank to expand access to Smart ID card services, allowing citizens to apply at select bank branches using secure digital terminals.
The initiative, part of the “Home Affairs @ home” program, enables paperless applications processed in 5 to 10 minutes, reducing long queues and travel.
Initially available at nine branches, the service will expand to 17 by the end of the week and eventually reach 1,000 branches by 2029.
It focuses on converting green ID books to Smart IDs and re-issuing existing cards, with plans to include first-time applications and passports.
The move aims to combat identity fraud, improve access, and support a future where digital IDs can be accessed remotely.
