Santos has approved the $357 million Moomba Central Optimisation project in South Australia’s Cooper Basin, replacing seven aging gas-driven compressor stations with a single electric-driven facility.
The three-year project aims to cut unit production costs by up to $3 per barrel of oil equivalent, deliver over $600 million in savings, and reduce Scope 1 emissions by 40,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
It supports long-term gas supply to South Australia’s Strategic Gas Reserve, with prepayment funds from a 20-petajoule annual supply deal from 2030 to 2040 helping finance the upgrade.
The initiative enhances efficiency, unlocks growth in the Central Fields, and strengthens regional energy security.
