Professor Dr. Sakhawat Ali Khan, a foundational figure in journalism education in Bangladesh, died at 85 on March 8, 2026, after a stroke.
He spent decades at the University of Dhaka’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, retiring in 2008 but remaining active as a supernumerary and honorary professor.
A former journalist, he contributed to media governance through roles in the Bangladesh Press Council and Press Institute of Bangladesh, and helped found civic organizations.
Over 30 research papers he authored focused on journalism and politics.
He is survived by his family and countless students.
A funeral prayer was held at Dhaka University’s Central Mosque, followed by burial in Shibpur, Narsingdi.
