One miner rescued, one body found at South Africa’s flooded Ekapa mine; four still trapped, mine liquidation ongoing.
One miner has been recovered from the Ekapa mine in Kimberley, South Africa, where five were trapped after a flood and mud rush on February 17.
The body was found 890 meters underground on March 9, with identification pending and the family requesting anonymity.
Rescue efforts for the remaining four miners continue, while the mine’s liquidation, declared due to financial and safety issues, has left over 1,100 workers unemployed.
The Northern Cape government pledged R3.5 million in aid, including cash grants and food vouchers.
An inquest is underway, and the mine’s liquidation will be reviewed in court on March 17.
