Ngāti Apakura and Stats NZ launch two-year data project to reconnect whānau and strengthen self-determination.
Ngāti Apakura and Stats NZ have launched a two-year partnership to reconnect scattered whānau using data, aiming to strengthen identity and self-determination despite the iwi’s lack of official recognition.
The initiative, rooted in tikanga and data sovereignty, helps the iwi build its own data capabilities for collection, management, and analysis.
With 300 people identifying as Ngāti Apakura in the 2023 Census, the project seeks to create a comprehensive tribal database to locate whānau, assess community needs in health, housing, and income, and support informed decision-making.
Upcoming hui in March offer opportunities for descendants to engage, share whakapapa, and contribute to the iwi’s future.
The effort is part of a broader reconciliation process with the Crown.
