Maine awarded $4.6M to restore ten wetlands, doubling funding, using developer fees to boost resilience and protect infrastructure.
Maine has awarded $4.6 million to ten wetland restoration projects, more than doubling last year’s funding, using developer fees from the state’s In Lieu Fee Compensation program.
The largest grant, $308,000, will restore the Great Meadow wetland in Acadia National Park by replacing an undersized culvert to reduce flooding and improve stream flow.
Other projects include eelgrass restoration in Great Salt Bay, salt marsh recovery along the York River, culvert upgrades on the Aroostook River, and wetland reestablishment on the Upper Magalloway River.
Administered by The Nature Conservancy, Maine DEP, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the program ensures restoration occurs near impacted sites.
Since 2008, it has distributed over $36 million to enhance ecosystem resilience, protect infrastructure, and support biodiversity.
