Madhya Pradesh farmers face denial of GI tag for their basmati rice, unlike 19 varieties from Uttar Pradesh, sparking protest threats.
Congress MP Digvijaya Singh has accused the central government of denying Madhya Pradesh farmers a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for their basmati rice, despite the crop’s long cultivation history and high international value.
Speaking in Bhopal, he said APEDA has not granted the tag, while 19 basmati varieties from Uttar Pradesh received recognition.
Singh cited global competition, especially from Pakistan, which has granted GI status to its basmati strains, and warned of a potential hunger strike by June if farmers do not receive benefits.
He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top ministers to act, emphasizing the injustice faced by farmers in regions like Vidisha.
Singh, who plans to retire after his second Rajya Sabha term, remains committed to party work and farmers’ welfare.
