Iraq’s coach seeks FIFA to delay March 31 World Cup playoff due to Middle East conflict travel issues.
Iraq’s head coach Graham Arnold has asked FIFA to delay the March 31 World Cup playoff against either Suriname or Bolivia, citing travel disruptions from the Middle East conflict, including closed airspace and embassy closures.
With Arnold stranded in the UAE and players unable to secure visas, he warned that fielding only overseas-based players would weaken the squad for what he called Iraq’s most important match in 40 years.
He proposed rescheduling the game to a week before the World Cup to allow proper preparation and give the UAE—whom Iraq defeated in qualifying—time to prepare for the Suriname-Bolivia winner.
The Iraqi Football Federation is working on solutions, but FIFA must act quickly to ensure that the match can be played under fair conditions and that both teams have adequate time to prepare.
