India needs more women in workforce to reach 2050 growth goal, study says.
A new Axis Bank study finds that India must boost women’s workforce participation to achieve its 2050 'Viksit Bharat' goal, requiring a rise in labor force participation from 47% to nearly 60% to sustain 7% annual growth.
With one of the lowest female labor force rates among G20 nations, most employed women work in informal, agricultural, or unpaid roles, and over 125 million educated women remain outside the workforce.
Barriers include lack of nearby non-farm jobs, inadequate childcare, safety concerns, inflexible work structures, and cultural norms.
The report stresses that expanding quality jobs, formalizing flexible work, investing in childcare and safe mobility, and creating re-entry pathways are essential to unlock women’s economic potential as a key driver of national growth.
