Jono Ridler, a human swimmer, has joined New Zealand’s Fish of the Year competition as an “honorary fish” after completing nearly 1,000km of a planned 1,400km swim along the North Island, drawing attention to marine conservation and bottom trawling.
Though ineligible for the top prize, his effort has boosted public engagement in the contest, which features the whale shark and longfin eel/tuna as top contenders.
Voting, open until March 15, allows up to three votes per person for eligible species or “fish-adjacent” candidates.
