Greenlandic politician Aaja Chemnitz nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for peace efforts with U.S. and Denmark after Trump’s 2024 Greenland threats.
Aaja Chemnitz, a 48-year-old Greenlandic politician and member of Denmark’s left-green IA party, has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize alongside U.S.
Senator Lisa Murkowski for their efforts to ease tensions between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland following former President Donald Trump’s 2024 threats to acquire the Arctic territory.
Chemnitz, who played a key role in organizing U.S. senators’ visits to Copenhagen and Nuuk, emphasized female leadership in peacebuilding and downplayed concerns that the nomination might reignite U.S. interest, stressing the need for strong Greenland-Denmark cooperation to prevent external interference.
She plans to step down from her Danish parliamentary seat ahead of March 24 elections but remains committed to Greenland’s future.
The prize will be awarded on October 9, 2026, among 338 candidates.
