A former New Jersey jail officer was sentenced to 17 months in prison for assaulting a handcuffed inmate in 2021, after lying about the attack and coordinating with others to cover it up.
Jose Gonzalez, a former Passaic County Jail officer, was sentenced to 17 months in federal prison for conspiring to assault a handcuffed pretrial detainee in a surveillance blind spot on January 23, 2021, after the inmate had squirted a urine-containing mixture on a guard.
Gonzalez and two other officers, including Sgt.
Donald Vinales, beat the inmate, causing hospitalization, with no use-of-force reports filed.
Gonzalez lied to investigators and coordinated with the others to deny the assault after receiving grand jury subpoenas.
Another officer, Lorenzo Bowden, pleaded guilty to obstruction in April 2024.
Gonzalez also faces two years of supervised release.
The case reveals systemic failures in accountability and transparency at the jail.
