Climate group accuses Mazda NZ of greenwashing by claiming tree planting offsets car emissions, calling the claim misleading.
Lawyers for Climate Action New Zealand have filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority, alleging Mazda New Zealand’s claim that planting five trees per new car offsets emissions is misleading.
The group, backed by climate expert Paul Young, says the trees absorb less than 0.1% of a typical petrol car’s CO2 emissions over five years—far short of neutralizing its impact.
They argue the advertising misrepresents environmental benefits, contributing to greenwashing in the transport sector, which accounts for 19% of New Zealand’s emissions.
The complaint follows similar actions against other companies and calls for accurate, science-based marketing claims.
